The Conjuring 4 Plot Overview

In 1981, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren were called to Brookfield, Connecticut, to document the exorcism of 8-year-old David Glatzel. David’s family, his sister Debbie, her boyfriend Arne Johnson, and Father Gordon are present. During the exorcism, Arne bravely invites the demon to enter his body instead of David’s. Ed witnesses the demon accept Arne’s offer but suffers a heart attack before he can warn anyone.

A month later, Ed awakens in the hospital and reveals to Lorraine that he saw the demon possess Arne. Soon after, Arne, under the demon’s influence, murders his landlord by stabbing him 22 times. This leads to the first U.S. murder trial to use demonic possession as a defence. The Warrens discover a witch’s totem at the Glatzel home, indicating a satanic curse. Their investigation leads them to Kastner, a former priest, who reveals that his daughter, Isla, is the occultist responsible. Isla had placed the totem to curse the Glatzels and cursed Arne.

Isla’s ultimate goal is to complete a demonic ritual, forcing Ed and Lorraine into a race against time to destroy her altar hidden beneath Kastner’s house. Lorraine stops Ed from killing her under the curse’s influence, and Ed smashes the altar, breaking the curse. In the end, Isla is killed by the demon she summoned, and Arne is convicted of manslaughter, serving five years in prison before marrying Debbie.
